Testimony Supporting Legislation that Promotes Hunger Reduction Programs and Policies Presented by James J. King, Executive Director February 14, 2022
The Catholic Church believes the issues we choose to address as a society reflect our priorities. One such priority for Catholics is a “preferential” care for the poor and vulnerable. Collectively society must work together to implement laws and policies intended to eliminate barriers that prevent people living in poverty from obtaining adequate, safe, and affordable housing, quality healthcare, clean water, and nutritious food. The New Jersey Catholic Conference commends the sponsors of the following anti-hunger legislation - - A2359, A2360, A2361, A2362, A2363, A2364, A2365, A2366, A2367, A2368, and ACR109 - - which intends to help those individuals and families struggling to obtain adequate and nutritious food needed to live a flourishing life. The Catholic Church in New Jersey remains committed to these efforts through our daily charge to foster, promote, and actionize our charitable legacy of feeding the hungry through a multitude of social agencies, parish-based food banks, and Catholic Charities. We encourage the Legislature to advance this legislation and remain willing partners ready to assist in any, and all, efforts that address the most vulnerable members of our society. Thank you.
